Size reduction is generally accomplished in several stages, as there are practical limitations on the ratio of size reduction through a single stage. Comminution is the science of the size reduction of rocks into fine material. Crushing and grinding are used in combination with classification process in mineral process plants.

Physical separation of minerals requires that mineral particles to be liberated by comminution. Successful separation techniques require the reduction of particles dimensions corresponding to the scale of mineralogical texture.
